Curatorial Extension Concept List

This document contains a list of proposed elements of the Curatorial Extension of the Darwin Core. This schema and documentation are open for discussion; they are not yet recommended for implementation.

This is not the normative representation of the draft standard. In the case of any conflict between representations, the protocol-independent Curatorial Extension schema takes precedence.

Status:

  • Ready for review. 29 Jun 2005. JRW
  • Not for implementation.
  • The discussion is on-going and this documentation will continue to be updated to reflect the evolving consensus until draft standard status is achieved.

Element Description Nillable Type Min Value Max Value
  Record-level Elements
CatalogNumberNumeric The CatalogNumber as a numeric value, if applicable. This element allows searching on numeric ranges of CatalogNumbers. Example: 145732. yes double
IdentifiedBy The name(s) of the person(s) who applied the ScientificName to the object or observation. Example: James L. Patton. yes string
DateIdentified The date-time in the Common Era calendar in which the object or observation was identified as being a member of the taxon given in the ScientificName. yes dateTime
CollectorNumber An identifying string applied to the object or observation at the time of collection. Serves as a link between field notes and the object or observation. yes string
FieldNumber An identifying string applied to a set of objects or observations resulting from a single collecting event. yes string
FieldNotes One of a) a flag indicating the existence of, b) a reference to (such as a URL or literature citation), or c) the actual free text content of notes taken in the field about the specimen or observation. yes string
VerbatimCollectingDate The verbatim original representation of the date (and time) information for the collecting event. Example: "spring 1910". yes string
VerbatimElevation A text representation of the altitude in its original format in the source database. Example: "1000+- meters". yes string
VerbatimDepth A text representation of the depth in its original format in the source database. Example: "100 to 200 ft below sea level". yes string
Preparations A concatenated list of preparations and preservation methods for the object. Examples: "skin", "skull", "skeleton", "whole animal (ETOH)", "tissue (EDTA)". yes string
TypeStatus A list of one or more nomenclatural types (including type status and typified taxonomic name) represented by the object. Example: "holotype of Ctenomys sociabilis. Pearson O. P., and M. I. Christie. 1985. Historia Natural, 5(37):388". yes string
GenBankNumber GenBank Accession number(s) associated with the biological individual(s) referred to by the cataloged object. yes string
OtherCatalogNumbers A list of previous or alternative fully qualified catalog numbers for the same object or observation, whether in the current collection or in any other. yes string
RelatedCatalogedItems One or more GlobalUniqueIdentifiers (cf. http://wiki.tdwg.org/twiki/bin/view/DarwinCore/GlobalUniqueIdentifier ) of related objects or observations, optionally preceded by the nature of the relationship. Examples: "(sibling of) URN:catalog:MVZ:Mammal:1234", "(endoparasite of) URN:catalog:FMNH:Bird:41321", "(sheet 2 of 2) URN:WTU:VascularPlants:353087". yes string
Disposition The current disposition of the cataloged item. Examples: "in collection", "missing", "voucher elsewhere", "duplicates elsewhere". yes string
IndividualCount The number of individuals present in the lot or container. Not to be used for observations. yes nonNegativeInteger

Currently all elements in this extension are assigned to the Record-level Elements category. The Element categories would probably be more helpful in deternining which DwC element should receive a particular legacy data element, if the following reassingments were made:

IdentifiedBy--Taxonomic Elements

DateIdentified--Taxonomic Elements

CollectorNumber--Collecting Event Elements

FieldNumber--Collecting Event Elements

FeildNotes--Collecting Event Elements

VerbatimCollectingDate--Locality Elements VerbatimElevation--Locallty Elements

VerbatimDepth--Locality Elements

Preparations--Collecting Event Elements

TypeStatus--Reference Elements

GenBankNumber--Reference Elements

OtherCalaogNumbers--Reference Elements

RelatedCatalogItems--Reference Elements

IndividualCount--Collecting Event Elements

The problem with concatenated string fields like this is-- if you want to use the data in them in a batch program, it first has to be parsed out the concatentated string field. The are bacth programs for both UTM and TRS cordinates and a large amvount to legacy data that is not geoferenced in botany. We would be better served by individual elements.

bubble !VerbatimDateIdentified -- Text data type Posted by: lapham at 2005-10-01 10:51 AM

A place to record date fragments that are incompatible with the DateTime datatype in DateIdentifed is needed.

bubble !FromAcronym Posted by: lapham at 2006-07-12 10:52 AM

This is a proposed new element to indicate the acronym of the iststtution that sent the duplicate to the extent that the data is known. Often the lable will indicate the soruce.
